UK Growth Distortions Cloud Pound's Rate Hike Prospects

Commerzbank's Michael Pfister points out that the UK's growth figures in the first quarter of this year were unusually strong, at 0.4% month-on-month. This is a significant deviation from the usual seasonal pattern, where all quarters show similar growth rates.

Since 2022, the UK has seen exceptionally strong growth in the first half of the year and particularly weak growth in the second. Pfister notes that this trend could be due to changes in seasonal patterns or issues with established seasonality adjustment methods.

This distortion complicates Bank of England policy signals, making it harder to conclude what the July's robust data means for future interest rates. Markets are increasingly pricing rate hikes, but lingering uncertainty about underlying momentum creates scope for disappointment and downside risks for the Pound.
