UK Inflation Expectations Soar to 3.9% Amid Rising Energy Costs

A recent survey conducted by Citi and YouGov has revealed that UK households now expect inflation to rise to 3.9% in the next 12 months, up from 3.4% in July. This marks the highest reading since May and signals a shift in expectations after a period of downward trend.

The increase in long-term inflation expectations to 4.1%, up from 3.7% in July, suggests that households are increasingly concerned about rising prices, particularly with regards to household fuel bills and food costs.

Citi economist Callum McLaren-Stewart described the development as 'hawkish' and significant, implying that central banks may need to take action to combat inflation. The Bank of England is closely watching this trend, as high inflation expectations can become self-fulfilling prophecies.
