UK Inflation Expectations Surge Amid Rising Energy Prices
UK inflation expectations have risen in August, according to a recent Citi/YouGov survey. The survey found that expectations for inflation over the next 12 months jumped to 3.9% from 3.4% in July.
This increase is part of a broader trend, as expectations for price growth in the longer term also rose to 4.1%, their highest level since April. This marks a significant shift from previous falls, and Citi has described it as 'a hawkish development'.
The Bank of England is closely monitoring these trends, particularly given the recent jump in energy prices due to the conflict with Iran. However, Citi is cautioning against over-interpreting this one report, suggesting that next month's release will provide a clearer picture.
