UK Inflation Expectations Surge as Energy Prices Bite
Public inflation expectations in Britain have risen in August, according to a recent survey from Citi and YouGov. The report shows that expectations for inflation over the next 12 months jumped to 3.9% from 3.4% in July. This is a significant increase, as it marks the first time this figure has risen since May.
The longer-term expectations for price growth also increased, reaching their highest level since April at 4.1%, up from 3.7% in July. Citi described this development as 'hawkish', suggesting that inflation may be picking up pace over the coming months.
The Bank of England is closely monitoring these developments, particularly with regards to the impact of rising energy prices caused by the Iran war on long-term inflation pressures.
