UK Inflation Expectations Surge to Highest Level Since April
British consumers have become increasingly concerned about future price pressures after inflation expectations rose in August. According to Citi and YouGov, UK households expect a 12-month inflation rate of 3.9% in August, up from 3.4% in July.
The long-term expectation, which measures the average annual rate over the next two years, also increased to 4.1% from 3.7%. This is the highest reading since April, and Citi describes it as a hawkish development for the series.
The Bank of England is closely monitoring this trend, as sustained rises in inflation expectations could make policy decisions more complicated. The central bank is watching whether higher energy prices will lead to more persistent inflation pressures across the economy.
