UK Inflation Expectations Surge to Highest Level Since April
Public inflation expectations in the UK have risen to their highest level since April, according to a recent survey from US bank Citi and pollsters YouGov. The survey showed that expectations for inflation over the next 12 months jumped to 3.9% from 3.4% in July.
Expectations for price growth in the longer term also increased to 4.1%, their highest level since April, from 3.7%. This rise in inflation expectations comes after a period of decline in recent months.
Citi described this development as 'hawkish', indicating that it could be a sign of increasing inflation pressures. The Bank of England is closely monitoring the situation, particularly with regards to the impact of rising energy prices caused by the Iran war.
However, Citi cautioned against over-interpreting this single report and suggested waiting for next month's release for a better understanding of the trend.
