UK Inflation Hits 2.9%, Threatening Mortgage Rate Hikes
The UK's inflation rate has risen to 2.9% in July, up from 2.6% in June, according to the Office for National Statistics. This increase raises concerns about the trajectory of mortgage rates and potential delays in anticipated interest rate cuts.
Nathan Emerson, Chief Executive of Propertymark, warns that significant fiscal uncertainty, both in the UK and globally, may keep inflation rates above pre-2021 levels, impacting affordability for existing homeowners and prospective buyers.
While several mortgage lenders have announced rate reductions recently, industry analysts caution that sustained inflation could reverse this trend. Energy prices are expected to increase, with tensions in the Persian Gulf threatening global markets.
Katy Eatenton, Mortgage & Protection Specialist of Eatenton Finance, notes that higher mortgage rates may result if prices continue to rise, which would be bad news for borrowers.
