UK Inflation Set to Rise Amid AI Chip Shortage and Energy Costs

UK inflation is expected to rise in the coming week due to various factors, including an AI chip shortage and higher energy costs. According to a Bloomberg survey, consumer prices are predicted to accelerate for the first time in four months, with a median estimate of a 2.9% jump in July.

The Bank of England is on high alert as the Iran war continues to impact plane travel and household energy bills, while the AI chip shortage drives up electronics prices. The British Retail Consortium's data suggests that rising chip costs are already feeding through to electronics prices, with Apple laptops and tablets, as well as Xbox gaming consoles, set to become more expensive.

The Bank of England has warned about the rapid expansion of AI capacity leading to higher memory chip costs, which could become a feature of core goods inflation in the coming months. The BOE's Chief Economist Huw Pill recently expressed concerns about the economy and called for tighter interest rates.
