UK Inflation Surges to 2.9% Amid Global Disruptions
UK inflation has surged to 2.9% in the 12 months to July, surpassing the previous reading of 2.6%, according to official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
This marks a significant increase and is likely to be the start of a prolonged period of rising price growth.
The upward pressures on inflation include furniture prices falling by less than usual, clothing prices being reduced due to discounting, and raw materials and goods leaving factories experiencing slower price increases driven by lower crude oil and refined petroleum prices.
Chancellor John Healey has responded to the news by stating that Britain's economy is resilient despite global disruptions and has thrown his weight behind government cost of living measures designed to ease the burden on households.
