UK Inflation Surges to 2.9% as Energy Price Cap Rises
Inflation in the UK has risen to 2.9% in July, its highest level since March, due to a 13% increase in Ofgem's energy price cap.
The rise in inflation has put pressure on consumers and raised questions over the outlook for interest rates, with the Bank of England likely to consider whether the rise is temporary or evidence of more persistent inflation.
Industry professionals are divided on the impact of the higher inflation rate. Jonathan Raymond, investment manager at Quilter Cheviot, expects inflation to moderate in the coming months as government initiatives begin to take effect, but warns that a renewed spike in inflation has been expected due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Others, such as Felix Feather, Economist at Aberdeen, are more cautious, suggesting that markets are undisturbed by the stronger headline and retaining an expectation for some modest tightening of Bank of England policy.
