UK Job Adverts Reveal Slowing Wage Growth Amid Brexit Uncertainty
The average advertised salary in the UK dropped by 2.4% in July to £32,688 ($43,174), according to an index by Adzuna.
This decline is even more pronounced when inflation is taken into account, with real earnings falling by 3%. The Bank of England expects continued wage growth, but the weaker pound may push up inflation and erode real incomes.
Adzuna attributes this stagnation in salaries to Brexit, as industries such as finance delay hiring and wait for political and economic decisions to become clearer. The labor market remained relatively stable before the European Union referendum, with companies adding 172,000 jobs in the three months leading up to it.
The number of advertised positions rose by 2.4% in July from a year earlier, although part-time vacancies dropped by 58%. Juergen Hardt, an ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, warned that the UK will have to pay into the European Union's budget if it wants to benefit from the single market's advantages.
