UK Labor Market Cools, Weakening Case for Further Rate Hikes
The UK labor market has shown signs of cooling, with job vacancies and wage growth slowing down. The Office for National Statistics reported that job vacancies have fallen for the third consecutive month, while average weekly earnings growth eased to 5.7% in the three months to May.
This moderation in pay pressures is significant because it reduces the pressure on the Bank of England to raise interest rates further. James Smith, an economist at ING, noted that 'the labor market is clearly losing momentum' and that the case for another hike in September has weakened.
The Bank of England raised its benchmark rate to 5.25%, the highest level in 15 years, just weeks ago. However, policymakers remain cautious as inflation is still running at 7.9%, more than triple the Bank's 2% target.
