UK Labor Market Weakens Amid Soaring Energy Prices
The UK's labor market continues to show signs of weakness, with job vacancies reaching a five-year low and employers shedding workers in July. The number of job vacancies dropped further to 707,000 in the May to July period, the lowest since 2021.
Meanwhile, inflation rates have intensified, fueled by soaring energy prices. UK consumer prices rose 2.9% from a year earlier in July, up from a 15-month low of 2.6% in June. The jump largely reflects a 13% rise in the price cap that sets household energy bills.
In contrast, business activity in the euro area showed modest growth, with private-sector activity expanding slightly in August thanks to strong manufacturing growth. However, France's economy continues to struggle, with its economic activity falling deeper into contraction territory.
