UK Labour Market Weakness Continues Amid Global Uncertainty

The UK labour market remains weak, with payrolls falling for the second consecutive month in July. According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), employee numbers dropped by 13,000, contrary to economists' expectations of no change. Job vacancies also hit a fresh five-year low at 707,000 in the May-July period.

The private sector wage growth rate eased to 2.8% in the second quarter, its lowest level in almost six years. This slowdown has led some experts to believe that inflationary pressures are not as significant as previously thought. The Bank of England (BOE) is closely monitoring this trend as it considers future interest rate decisions.

Unemployment remained steady at 4.9% in the three months through June, but the jobless rate among 16-24-year-olds edged down to 16.2%. ONS director Liz McKeown noted that smaller businesses were driving the decline in vacancies due to labour and operating costs.
