UK Leads Europe on FMCG Inflation with 2.3% Rate
The UK has taken the lead in Europe when it comes to inflation in the FMCG sector. According to a recent report by NielsenIQ, Britain recorded an FMCG inflation rate of 2.3% for the year up to May 24th. This is significantly higher than the European average of 1.1%. France and Italy reported the lowest inflation rates at -0.4% and +0.6%, respectively.
The report, which tracks department-level inflation, price elasticity, and shopper behavior across five major Western European markets, found that non-alcoholic beverages recorded the highest inflation rate in Britain at 4.4%. Confectionery & Snacks followed closely with an inflation rate of 2.8%, while Frozen Food had a rate of 2.7%.
Benjamin Cawthray, Client Director at NielsenIQ, commented that the report reveals a slowdown in FMCG inflation across Western Europe's largest markets. However, he noted that Great Britain remains an outlier with its high FMCG inflation rate, while France has moved back into deflationary territory.
