UK Pound Steadies as Inflation Holds at 2.3%
The UK pound remained steady against major currencies on Wednesday after inflation data was released. According to the Office for National Statistics, Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rose by 2.3% in the year to April, unchanged from the previous month and matching market expectations.
This development eased concerns that the Bank of England might be forced into more aggressive interest rate hikes. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also came in at 3.9%, slightly below the 4.0% predicted by some analysts.
The pound initially ticked lower against the US dollar and euro before stabilizing as traders interpreted the data as reducing the likelihood of an imminent rate increase by the Bank of England.
