UK Private Sector Growth Hits Four-Month High Amid Cost Pressures
The UK private sector experienced growth at its fastest pace in four months in August, according to provisional Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) estimates by S&P Global. This rebound comes despite concerns over rising inflation and business costs. The PMI survey showed that the services sector contributed significantly to this growth, offsetting a slowdown in manufacturing.
The UK's private sector PMI rose to 52.5 in August, surpassing the threshold of 50.0 that separates growth from contraction. This reading is higher than July's score of 52.2, but manufacturers saw slower growth with their sector's reading dipping from 51.9 to 51.5.
According to Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, 'the UK economy picked up a bit more pace in August' and is expected to see solid economic growth of around 0.3% in the third quarter. However, he also noted that cost pressures remain high due to energy prices and supply disruption linked to the Middle East conflict alongside high staffing costs.
