UK Public Inflation Expectations Slide in July Survey
British consumers have shown a decrease in inflation expectations for both short and long-term projections. According to a joint survey conducted by Citi and YouGov, individuals anticipate a 3.4% increase in prices over the next year, down from 3.8% in June. Looking ahead five or more years, respondents forecasted an even lower rate of 3.7%, marking a slight drop from 3.9% last month.
The Bank of England closely monitors inflation expectations to gauge whether price pressures are becoming ingrained among consumers and businesses. The central bank paused its interest rate hikes earlier this year due to soaring energy costs, which were exacerbated by the Iran conflict.
Citi economist Callum McLaren-Stewart highlighted a potential risk: delayed pump price increases might lead to a slight uptick in inflation expectations. However, he noted that pump prices respond quickly to crude oil prices and July's increase was well below second-quarter levels, making it unlikely to have a significant impact.
