UK Retail Prices Surge 1.5% Amid Electronics and Food Cost Increases
The UK retail sector has experienced its fastest shop price increase in over two years, according to the Traders Union. The British Retail Consortium's (BRC) shop price index rose by 1.5% year on year in August, up from 0.9% in July.
This acceleration in prices is attributed to rising costs for food processing and electronics, with August marking a four-month high in both categories. BRC food price inflation climbed to 2.8% in August from 2.2% in July, while non-food inflation increased to 0.9% from 0.2%, reaching its highest level since February 2024.
The Bank of England forecasts that consumer price growth and food inflation will climb further in the coming months. The central bank expects CPI to peak at 3.2% in October-November, while food price inflation is predicted to reach 3.5% in December.
