UK Retail Sales Drop as Hot Weather Deter Shoppers

British retail sales have dropped for the first time in three months, according to recent data from the Office for National Statistics. In July, total retail sales volume fell by 0.5% compared to the previous month, which was a downwardly revised 0.7% increase.

The decline was led by non-food stores and online retailers, which saw sales fall 1.3%. Clothing discounts were less widespread than usual for this time of year, contributing to the drop in sales at clothing stores. Household goods and department store sales also declined due to heat and stock shortages.

On the other hand, food stores bucked the trend with a boost from the World Cup. The hot weather may have discouraged shoppers, as England recorded its driest July since records began in 1836, according to the Met Office.

The Bank of England (BOE) is paying close attention to British consumers as it faces a trade-off between slow demand and inflationary pressures. A weak jobs market has eased the risk of second-round effects, but the BOE expects price rises to accelerate further in the coming months.
