UK Retail Sales Get Surprise Boost from Hot Weather and World Cup
British retail sales received an unexpected boost in June due to hot weather and the World Cup. According to data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), sales volumes rose by 1.0% in June, surpassing economists' forecasts of a 0.3% decline.
The ONS also reported that internet sales reached their highest share since April 2021 at 29.4% during the three months to June, as shoppers avoided high streets due to the heatwave. Online retailers and market stalls saw a significant increase in sales, rising by 4.4% month-over-month as households purchased fans to stay cool.
Ruth Gregory, deputy chief UK economist at Capital Economics, commented that consumers continued spending despite rising energy prices since the conflict in Iran began. However, Thomas Pugh, chief economist at RSM UK, warned that inflation is likely to rise above 3.5%, potentially forcing the Bank of England to raise interest rates and squeeze household budgets.
Quarterly sales volumes rose by 0.6% in the three months to June, while volumes were 4.2% higher compared to a year ago. The data follows recent updates from major British retailers, which have shown mixed results: Sainsbury's reported improved trading due to the heatwave, while Currys saw a surge in demand for fans and air conditioning products.
