UK Retail Sales Get Unexpected Boost from Warm Weather and World Cup
UK retail sales experienced an unexpected boost in June due to warm weather and the soccer World Cup, according to official data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The ONS reported a 1.0% increase in sales volumes in June, surpassing economists' forecasts of a 0.3% fall.
The surge in retail spending was driven by increased purchases of air conditioning and clothing as households sought to stay cool during one of the hottest Junes on record. The share of internet sales rose to its highest since April 2021 at 29.4% in the three months to June, with online retailers seeing a 4.4% month-over-month increase.
Ruth Gregory, deputy chief UK economist at Capital Economics, noted that consumers have been resilient despite rising energy prices since the war in Iran began. However, Thomas Pugh, chief economist at RSM UK, cautioned that this resilience may not last as inflation is likely to rise above 3.5%, increasing the risk of interest rate hikes by the Bank of England.
Quarterly sales volumes rose by 0.6% in the three months to June, with volumes being 4.2% higher compared to a year ago. The ONS data suggests that consumers are continuing to spend despite the rise in energy prices, but Pugh warned that this 'bigger test' is yet to come.
