UK Services Boom Fuels GBP/EUR Stability Amid Eurozone Headwinds
The Pound to Euro exchange rate traded relatively flat on Wednesday, influenced by contradictory economic data from both regions. Stronger-than-expected services PMI readings from the UK and Eurozone cancelled each other out.
In the UK, the final services PMI reading rose from 48.8 in June to 52.1 in July, exceeding the preliminary estimate of 51.8 and indicating a return to expansion. This modestly supported Sterling, although the relatively small upward revision limited its gains.
Meanwhile, the Eurozone's final services PMI also increased, rising from 49.4 to 51.7 and confirming that the sector returned to growth in July. However, this improvement was insufficient to generate significant gains for the single currency against the Pound.
The Pound-Euro exchange rate may be affected by upcoming economic releases. Germany's latest factory orders report is expected on Thursday, with markets anticipating order growth slowing sharply from 1.9% in May to 0.3% in June. A weaker-than-expected reading could weigh on the Euro, potentially pushing the Pound higher.
The Eurozone's retail sales figures are also due for release later on Thursday. Forecasts suggest sales growth slowed from 0.2% to 0.1% in June, which could place additional pressure on the single currency.
