Ukrainians Miss Out on Cash as Rare Banknotes Go Unnoticed
Ukrainians are losing money at currency exchange points due to their lack of awareness about rare and valuable banknotes. Certain U.S. dollar and euro bills, featuring uncommon characteristics such as a star next to their serial number or aesthetically pleasing serial numbers, can fetch significantly more than their face value among collectors.
According to ХВИЛЯ, these special notes are often overlooked by currency exchange offices, which only redeem them at their nominal value. As a result, Ukrainians who exchange these valuable bills at standard rates may end up losing money.
The most recognizable example of a rare dollar bill is one with a star next to its serial number, indicating it was printed as a replacement for a defective note. Collectors are willing to pay more than face value for such currency.
For euros, banknotes with unusual or aesthetically pleasing serial numbers also attract strong demand, with some online marketplaces listing single 20-euro notes for prices well above their denomination.
