Uncertain Rate Path for US Interest Rates Amid Inflation and Mideast Tensions

The US Federal Reserve's interest rate path remains uncertain due to persistent inflation and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, according to the South Korean finance ministry. The statement comes after the Fed kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at a range of 3.5-3.75 percent overnight.

This is the fifth consecutive pause, leaving a gap of up to 1 percentage point between Korea's key interest rates and those of the US. Despite solid momentum in the US economy, driven by business facility investment and AI-related investment, participants at a meeting noted that inflation remains high, both in the US and Europe.

Geopolitical instability in the Middle East is also contributing to uncertainty, according to the finance ministry. The participants vowed to continue monitoring monetary policies of major countries and global oil price trends.
