UniCredit Nears 50% Stake in Commerzbank as ECB Approval Looms
UniCredit's acquisition of Commerzbank is gaining momentum as the Italian bank's stake nears the 50% threshold. The European Central Bank (ECB) appears to be favoring UniCredit's application, but regulatory hurdles and political considerations remain.
The ECB has received UniCredit's application for approval to push beyond the 30% ownership threshold, which currently stands at around 47.6%. A green light from Frankfurt would give UniCredit just under half of Commerzbank shares.
Berlin's remaining 12.7% stake is crucial in this takeover bid. If the federal government were to sell its holding to UniCredit, the Italian bank would secure majority control.
Commerzbank's CEO Bettina Orlopp and UniCredit's CEO Andrea Orcel recently met to discuss strategic implications of a potential merger. The meeting highlights operational rapprochement between the two banks as they navigate regulatory consolidation.
