Air New Zealand introduced its Economy Skycouch in 2011, providing passengers on long-haul flights with a flat surface to lie down. This product filled a gap between economy and premium economy classes that no other airline had addressed.

For 15 years, Air New Zealand's Skycouch generated consistent incremental revenue across its widebody fleet. The airline licensed the design to three international carriers: Air Austral, Azul Brazilian Airlines, and China Airlines.

In 2026, United Airlines announced Relax Row, a licensed derivative of Skycouch with exclusive North American rights. This mechanical economy lie-flat product will be installed on over 200 Boeing 787s and 777s by 2030.
