US and Australian Interest Rate Markets Face Conflicting Signals

The US and Australia interest rate markets are facing conflicting signals, while New Zealand's Reserve Bank is expected to keep its interest rates on track. Roger Kerr notes that there are disagreements between the US Federal Reserve and government officials regarding interest rates. The current market prediction platforms and interest rate futures markets have a 50% probability of a 0.25% interest rate hike by the Fed at their upcoming meeting.

The Australian Reserve Bank is also facing conflicting views, with some economists predicting that the bank will need to hike interest rates further to control inflation, while others believe it won't be necessary. The RBA's preferred 'trimmed mean' measure of inflation has jumped up to an annualised pace of 4.70%, indicating that inflation is accelerating in Australia.

New Zealand's Reserve Bank, on the other hand, is expected to continue its path of increasing interest rates to rectify monetary policy errors made in late 2025. The RBNZ will present its full set of updated economic forecasts at its upcoming Monetary Policy Statement, which is likely to be more upbeat than previous statements due to reduced global geo-political risks and a better-than-expected response to the energy crisis.
