US and Canada Close to Finalizing Comprehensive Trade Deal
The United States and Canada have signaled that they are close to finalizing a comprehensive trade deal. The agreement comes after President Donald Trump paused implementing new tariffs on Canadian goods, which were set to take effect on Wednesday. The planned tariffs, worth 50 percent, would have targeted products such as wine, hockey sticks, and cement.
In a joint statement, the two countries acknowledged that significant progress had been made in the negotiations, but cautioned that there was still work to be done before an agreement could be finalized. Trump expressed confidence that the deal would benefit US farmers, who have complained about restricted access to Canadian markets.
The White House had previously alleged 'discriminatory treatment' by Canada against American alcohol, automobile, and dairy products, which led to the imposition of new tariffs. However, the US trade representative, Jamieson Greer, expressed confidence that both sides have a pact that will strengthen the North American economy.
