US and Japan Unite Against Yen Speculators

The US and Japan have coordinated their efforts to defend against speculative bets on the yen's value. The decision to intervene was preceded by months of preparation, including behind-the-scenes discussions between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama.

Bessent has provided support for a stronger yen, which is beneficial for Japan as it reduces import costs and alleviates pressure on household living expenses. However, the weak yen also hurts the US trade advantage from President Donald Trump's tariff policies, while a sell-off in Japanese government bonds could affect US Treasury yields.

The joint effort marks a rare public alignment between Washington and Tokyo on currency issues, which have historically been sensitive diplomatic matters. Japan has attempted to slow sharp yen declines through unilateral intervention before, but those actions failed to establish lasting support for the currency.
