US August NFP Surpasses Expectations with 162K Job Increase
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics released its August Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) report on Friday, revealing a significant increase in employment. The NFP rose by 162K in August, surpassing market expectations of 56K and following July's decrease of 23K.
The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1%, as expected, while the labor force participation rate increased to 61.6% from 61.4%. The annual wage inflation, measured by the change in Average Hourly Earnings, declined to 3.1% from 3.2%.
Market reaction was swift, with the US Dollar Index (USD) gaining 0.3% as a result of the report's strong numbers. Strategists at BNY Mellon noted that Friday's NFP report is now 'the key release for rates, FX, and risk assets.'
TD Securities took a more cautious view, arguing that a robust US jobs report alone may not shift the Fed's near-term policy stance, emphasizing that 'a strong payrolls report is a necessary but not sufficient condition for the Fed to hike in September.'
