US Businesses Anticipate Easing Inflation and Slowing Investment Growth
A recent survey by the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland has revealed that businesses in the US expect inflation to ease over the coming year, but investment growth is likely to slow down.
The survey found that executives anticipate consumer price index (CPI) inflation of 3.3% over the next year, down from 3.7% in the second quarter. This decline suggests that businesses see less persistent inflation pressure, although expected inflation remains above the Fed's target of 2%.
The labor market is expected to remain stable, with wage growth projected at 2.8% over the coming year, slightly below the 2.9% level recorded in last year's survey. Employment levels are also anticipated to remain relatively unchanged.
A notable shift, however, is visible in research and development spending, which is expected to grow just 2.0% over the coming year, down sharply from 3.1% in last year's survey. This slowdown could indicate greater caution among businesses as they assess economic conditions and financing costs.
