US-Canada Trade Tensions Escalate as Trump Accuses Canada of Cheating

Canada's economy is built on international trade, with its exports accounting for over 64% of its economic output. Yet, despite this openness to trade, Canada has been accused by US President Donald Trump of being a 'predator' that cheats the US and strangles its industries.

The two countries have a long-standing trade agreement, known as the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which took effect on July 1, 2020. Under this agreement, most American products enter Canada duty-free. However, Trump has complained that Canada discriminates against US auto, dairy, and alcoholic beverage exports.

The dispute escalated in August when the US imposed tariffs of 50% on $20 billion worth of Canadian products. In response, Canada retaliated with its own tariffs. The US then banned imports of certain Canadian products, including whey, most alcoholic beverages, and motorcycles and mopeds.

Despite these tensions, trade between the two countries remains significant. The US runs a trade deficit with Canada, but this is largely due to Canada's oil exports. In 2025, Canada exported over $85 billion worth of crude oil to the US, which cannot be replaced by other sources.
