US-Canada Trade Tensions Weigh on CAD, Fueling Stronger USD
Escalating tensions between the US and Canada are keeping downside risks alive for the Canadian Dollar against its US counterpart, according to ING's Francesco Pesole. The trade conflict has reached new heights with US President Donald Trump announcing 50% tariffs on Canadian autos and parts from January 1.
The situation remains in the escalation phase, with both sides remaining firmly entrenched in trade-conflict territory. This underpins the USD/CAD pair, which has recently rebounded but still has room to extend beyond $1.390.
Pesole notes that while there is some caution around disrupting the auto sector ahead of the US midterm elections, the implementation date allows for ample room for negotiations. However, the ongoing trade tensions continue to influence the pair's dynamics.
