US-Canada Trade War Escalates as Tariffs Bite
The trade war between the US and Canada continues to escalate as the Trump administration enacts new tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods. The move, which was implemented over the weekend, targets a range of products including wine, hockey sticks, cement, and chemical wood pulp.
Canada has vowed to retaliate with its own tariffs, starting next month, targeting American goods such as steel, dairy products, appliances, agricultural equipment, and electronics. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada will respond 'dollar for dollar' to the US tariffs, hitting some of Maine's biggest exports to Canada.
Maine businesses and leaders have expressed concern about the impact of the trade war on their state. Sen. Susan Collins, a Republican, called the new tariffs 'a disaster for our economy,' while Gov. Janet Mills, a Democrat, said they would 'push costs even higher for Maine families.'
