US-Canada Trade War Escalates as Tariffs Bite into Billions

A trade war between the US and Canada is escalating, with each country imposing tariffs on billions of dollars' worth of goods. President Donald Trump's administration placed a 50% tariff on Canadian goods worth around $20 billion after trade talks fell apart in late August.

Canada retaliated by slapping its own equivalent import taxes on American goods, which came into effect on Tuesday.

Jayash Paudel, associate professor of economics at the University of Oklahoma, said that while the tariffs may not directly impact US agricultural exports, they could have a broader impact on the farm economy. 'It's not really about winning or losing here,' he said. 'I think ultimately the heat is going to be felt by Americans.'

The US agriculture industry relies heavily on integrated North American manufacturing and transportation networks, which could be disrupted by the tariffs.
