US-Canada Trade War Escalates as Tariffs Take Effect
A trade war between the US and Canada has escalated as tariffs take effect on both sides. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said 'our tariffs are necessary to protect our workers, protect our companies and our community.' The duties impact about $20 billion of American goods, including steel and aluminum, dairy, appliances, clothing, and electronics.
President Donald Trump has been critical of Canada's approach, saying 'we look at our past trade deals and we understand that these opened borders and foreign services undermine a lot of workers so we are trying to fix that so we can have our jobs back.' The White House insists US tariffs are about bringing fairness back to trade.
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has announced legislation to repeal President Trump's 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, calling the trade war 'the latest example of the president playing political games at the expense of our economy, our alliances, and American families' financial security.'
