US Consumer Inflation Expectations Flat as Employment Worries Deepen
US consumers' inflation expectations remained steady in August, but concerns over employment and household finances intensified, according to the Survey of Consumer Expectations from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The survey found that one-year-ahead expected inflation stood at 3.6% and five-year-ahead at 3.0%, both unchanged from July.
The employment outlook deteriorated rapidly, with the proportion of respondents who believe the unemployment rate will be higher one year from now reaching its highest level since April 2020. This trend was confirmed across a broad range of demographics regardless of age, income, or education level.
Household assessments of their financial situations also deteriorated, with views on both current and future household conditions declining. The survey results present conflicting signals for monetary policy management, with stable inflation expectations alongside labor market anxiety.
