US Consumer Inflation Expectations Hold Steady at 3.3%, Fed Flexibility on Interest Rates
The University of Michigan's Survey of Consumers reported that consumer inflation expectations for the five-year horizon remained steady at 3.3% in August, matching economists' forecasts and holding steady from the previous month.
This key indicator is closely watched by the Federal Reserve as it gauges whether inflation expectations remain anchored.
The survey also showed that the one-year inflation expectation edged up to 3.5% in August from 3.4% in July, reflecting ongoing concerns about near-term price pressures.
Despite this slight uptick, the stability of the longer-term measure is often considered more significant for policy decisions, as it suggests that consumers do not anticipate a sustained acceleration in inflation.
