US Consumer Inflation Expectations Remain Unchanged in August
US consumers' short-term inflation expectations remained steady in August, according to a survey by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The median inflation expectation for the next 12 months stayed at 3.6%, while five-year-ahead projections held firm at 3%. Expectations for inflation three years ahead declined slightly to 3.2%.
Gasoline prices were expected to rise 4.6% in the next year, up from a 1.7 percentage point increase previously. Food and medical care costs are also anticipated to grow, with food increasing by 5.3% and medical care rising by 9.1%. College education expenses and rent are expected to increase by 6.1% and 6.6%, respectively.
Consumers became more pessimistic about their current financial situation and access to credit in August. The probability of the US unemployment rate being higher a year from now increased to 44.4%, its highest since April 2020.
