US Consumers 'Running Out of Money': CEOs Sound Alarm on Financial Strain
The CEOs of Kraft Heinz, McDonald's, and Whirlpool have sounded the alarm about US consumers facing financial strain. In an interview, Kraft Heinz CEO Steve Cahillane said that lower-income consumers 'are literally running out of money at the end of the month.'
Cahillane noted that his company has seen negative cash flows in lower-income brackets, where people are dipping into savings to make ends meet.
This is not an isolated concern. McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski and Whirlpool CEO Marc Bitzer have also flagged pressure on consumers, citing heightened anxiety and a sharp pullback in demand for big-ticket appliances, respectively.
According to the Federal Reserve's Report on the Economic Well-Being of U.S. Households, 16% of adults said they didn't pay all their bills in full during the previous month.
