US CPI Data Release on Wednesday Expected to Provide Clues on Fed Rate Path

Financial markets are waiting for the release of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data on Wednesday, which is expected to show a modest increase in prices. The July CPI report, scheduled for release at 8:30 a.m. ET by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is forecast to show headline inflation rising 0.1% month-over-month and core inflation increasing 0.2%. This would be a slight easing of inflation from June's readings.

The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged at its July meeting, but three policymakers voted in favor of a rate hike. Market expectations have since become more fluid as investors weigh signs of moderating inflation against lingering concerns over price pressures.

Analysts believe the July inflation report is unlikely to show a dramatic shift, but it will be closely scrutinized for signs that price pressures continue to ease. Some economists, like Vanguard's Adam Schickling, expect inflation to trend closer to the Fed's 2% target.
