US CPI Data to Provide Crucial Clues on Fed Rate Path
Financial markets are waiting for the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data release on Wednesday, which will provide clues to the Federal Reserve's interest rate path. The July CPI is expected to show a modest increase in prices, with economists surveyed by Dow Jones forecasting headline inflation to rise 0.1% month-on-month and core inflation to increase 0.2%. On an annual basis, headline inflation is forecast to ease to 3.4% from 3.5%, while core inflation is expected to slow to 2.5% from 2.6%.
The inflation data follows a disappointing US payrolls report released last week, which showed the labor market unexpectedly shed jobs in July. The weaker employment data has reduced expectations for another rate increase this year, shifting attention to inflation as the next major indicator that could influence monetary policy.
Vanguard economist Adam Schickling believes the CPI will show some of June's unusually sharp declines returning to normal levels, but notes that inflation continues to move in the right direction. 'Inflation has been stickier and persistent,' he said. Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM, expects a report broadly matching expectations to reinforce the Federal Open Market Committee's decision to remain patient.
