US Cracks Down on Iran with New Sanctions Amid Currency Crisis
The United States has imposed new sanctions on Iran in an effort to cut off all potential sources of revenue for the country. According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, these sanctions aim to block any economic engagement with Iran and put more pressure on its already battered economy.
Bessent made it clear that nations must choose between cutting ties with Tehran or facing retaliation from the US. He warned that 'any escalation' of this situation would bring consequences, as stated by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei.
The new sanctions come amid a significant decline in Iran's currency, the rial, which has hit a record low of 2.02 million to the US dollar. The country's economy is facing double-digit inflation and negative growth due to ongoing war with the US and Israel.
