US Debt Hits Record $39.84 Trillion as Treasury Secretary Bails Out Yen
According to 24/7 Wall St., the United States' debt has reached a record high of $39.84 trillion as of July 30, 2026. This figure is increasing by approximately $12.6 billion each day and is likely to exceed $40 trillion before September 30.
The U.S. Treasury's own accounting reports that the country owed $19.9 trillion in January 2017, at the beginning of Trump's first term. The debt has nearly doubled since then, with a full trillion added in just under five months.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent orchestrated a coordinated dollar-yen intervention on July 31 and August 1, which is the first such event in over a decade. He described the yen as 'very undervalued' and stated that the U.S. would participate in further joint intervention if necessary.
The intervention involved Japan spending an estimated ¥8.45 trillion (approximately $52.8 billion) on July 30, with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York then selling euros to buy yen on behalf of the U.S. Treasury.
