US Disrupts Chinese Hacking Operation Targeting Sensitive Government Agencies
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it had disrupted a Chinese hacking operation targeting sensitive government agencies, including NASA, the Federal Reserve, and the Senate.
The DOJ said it seized domains used by two hacking platforms, QScan and QTRouter, which were run by Nanjing Xinjiuwei Network Technology Company in China. The company's clients included China's Ministry of State Security and its military, the People's Liberation Army.
The hackers, who have been active since at least 2018, used tools they developed to compromise critical infrastructure and other sensitive networks worldwide. They successfully stole data from unnamed defense contractors, financial institutions, and universities in May 2024.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington disputed the DOJ's claims, stating that China opposes all forms of cyberattacks and that the US uses cybersecurity issues to 'smear or discredit' China.
