US Dollar Dominance Faces Challenge as Global Currencies Rise

The US dollar's dominance in the international financial system may be waning, but it will likely take time for other currencies to catch up. According to historian Barry Eichengreen's book 'Money Beyond Borders', the US dollar has been the world's leading currency since World War II.

Eichengreen explores the history of international currencies, from ancient Greece to modern times. He notes that dominant currencies tend to share common characteristics, such as being issued by large and stable economies with extensive trade networks.

The emergence of the US dollar as a global currency is attributed to the establishment of the Federal Reserve in 1913, the growth of the US economy, and the weakening of the British pound after World War I. The Bretton Woods agreement in 1944 further solidified the dollar's position by pegging other currencies to it.

Today, the US dollar accounts for around 90% of foreign exchange transactions and is used for invoicing about 40% of global trade. However, Eichengreen suggests that this dominance may eventually fade as other countries challenge the dollar's status.
