US Dollar Index Edges Higher on Safe-Haven Buying Amid US-Iran Tensions
The US dollar index edged higher on Thursday, August 6, to around 99.75 during the European session. The uncertainty surrounding US-Iran negotiations has provided a safe-haven buying support for the dollar.
Rising geopolitical tensions are driving demand for safe-haven assets, while hawkish comments from Federal Reserve officials have also bolstered the currency.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Gharibabadi stated that Iran and Oman are nearing the finalization of a framework agreement on commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. However, he emphasized that the agreement will not automatically reopen this critical waterway.
This stands in contrast to Trump's earlier optimistic remarks that the talks had been 'very productive'. Conflicting statements from US and Iranian officials have heightened market concerns about the prospects for an agreement, prompting a return of safe-haven capital to the dollar.
