US Dollar Index Takes Hit Amid Safe-Haven Concerns
The US Dollar Index has been on a decline since late July, losing about 2% in value. According to Rabobank's Senior FX Strategist Jane Foley, this recent slide raises questions about the dollar's status as a safe-haven currency.
The dollar's weakness is not entirely unexpected, given its previous performance during the Middle East crisis and the Iran war. In April 2025, the dollar suffered sharp losses following President Trump's tariffs announcements, which undermined confidence in its safe-haven role.
Foley notes that despite the recent decline, the dollar has still been considered a primary safe-haven currency since May, finding support from Fed rate hike speculation. However, the current market sentiment is clouded by concerns about Fed credibility and rate cut rhetoric.
