US Dollar Soars Above 160 Against Yen Following Warsh's Hawkish Rhetoric
The US dollar has strengthened against major currencies following Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh's 'hawkish' rhetoric at Jackson Hole, pushing the USD/JPY exchange rate above 160 for the first time in a month.
Warsh emphasized that current monetary policy is insufficiently restrictive and expressed his belief that the central bank still has much work to do. This stance sent Treasury bond yields higher and sparked concerns about inflation, prompting stock indices to decline.
The futures market now sees a 60% probability of a Fed rate hike in September, up from 38%, while the likelihood of two federal funds rate hikes this year is estimated at 49%, up from 21%. The escalating conflict in the Middle East has also contributed to rising economic indicators, including a surge in Brent crude prices back above $90 per barrel.
The strengthening US dollar allowed USD/JPY 'bulls' to push the exchange rate above the critical 160 mark, although it failed to hold this level on its first attempt. Speculators have been building up short positions on the yen for two consecutive weeks, suggesting further attempts may follow.
